Text description provided by the architects. The Community Development Center project aims to be a place to respond to the needs of a highly marginalized area by offering educational, legal and medical services, and a community dining room; it could also be used as a distribution point for food and supplies in the event of a natural disaster. The project is organized in three parallel volumes oriented East-West to reduce direct exposure to the sun on the facades and the heat gains that it implies, and it is distributed on a single level to guarantee universal accessibility.

The construction process throughout the building uses handcrafted bricks produced in the region to support the local economy. The brick is exposed as a finished wall to reduce building construction and maintenance costs over the years. The concrete reinforcement elements of the building are also covered with brick to maintain the visual continuity of the surfaces

The floors are exposed concrete and are part of the same structural foundation slab. The ceiling is made up of Catalan vaults, also in brick, with an upper concrete slab protecting the brick from any type of deterioration or bad weather. The project provides support for the daily activities of the inhabitants of the district and for any eventuality for the whole community while seeking to improve the urban development of the city.

In a very marginalized area in the middle of the mountains and far from the main cities, the project offers a complex that can be used as a supply point for basic products – food, water, medicines – and services to the region, being also a shelter people in situations of violence – by the family or the city – and provide support in the event of risk or emergency situations. In addition, it offers a first medical contact clinic. El constructive process and materials have been selected to allow the same inhabitants of this place of the country to participate as suppliers of materials or in the construction of the building, this seeking to maintain the benefits of the project not only at the social level but also in the city’s economy.
