Kemin has been committed to improving the quality of life since the company was founded in 1961. RW and Mary Nelson created the company with US$10,000 in savings, an old wool barn for mixing products and the family living room as the first head office. Initially focused on serving the agricultural industry in the Midwestern United States, Kemin quickly expanded into new industries and countries. Today, Kemin creates products for the human and animal health and nutrition, pet food, aquaculture, nutraceuticals, food technology, agricultural technology, textile, biofuels and vaccine industries. for animals.

“Growing up, Kemin was a part of my life from the very beginning, and I’m proud to carry on the work and legacy of my parents and the Nelson family,” said Dr. chris nelsonPresident and CEO, Kemin Industries. “In just six decades, Kemin has gone from operating in a single region to serving customers in over 120 countries with over 500 specialty ingredients. It’s truly amazing to see what science, innovation and dedication can create to better serve the world and positively impact communities.”

As a global company operating in various industries, Kemin has committed in 2021 to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Conversion to clean energy, including solar power, is a key part of Kemin’s sustainability journey.

Kemin’s ground and rooftop solar panels power 100% of its 90,000 square foot headquarters with more than 1.046 million kilowatt hours of energy annually. As one of the largest corporate solar facilities in the state of IowaKemin’s ground-mounted solar panels are part of an active tracking system that follows the sun’s path across the sky for 20% more power output and greater efficiency.

For 61 years, Kemin has focused on transforming tomorrow through its work today, and sustainability, along with service to the community and those in need, is essential to fostering a better tomorrow.

In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, one of its longtime community partners in the United States and around the world, Kemin hosted an onsite build at its monks campus, where employees volunteered to build the interior and exterior walls of a Habitat home that will be completed during the Iowa State Fair in August.

As the title sponsor of the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity’s first Iowa State Fair build since 2005, Kemin team members will also participate in two days of builds at the fairgrounds.

“As the impact of climate change continues to grow, we have an imperative to combat its effects and we can do so with the use of clean energy, such as our solar installations at facilities around the world,” said said Dr. Nelson. “We are also focused on supporting organizations like Habitat for Humanity, which uses building methods that reduce waste, lessening our effect on the environment while creating sustainable homes within communities. The more we can work together to solve serious problems like climate change, the greater the impact of our joint efforts.”

The founders of Kemin, RW and Mary Nelson created Kemin to focus on serving customers and contributing to the community, which established a foundation of servant leadership. As they reflected on the past six decades, RW and Mary Nelson said that “While we are extremely proud of what Kemin has become over the past 61 years as a company, we are deeply honored and grateful for the efforts of Kemin employees who have dedicated their time and talents to help to make the world a better place while continuing to give back to their communities.”

For more than six decades, Kemin has used innovation, scientific expertise and commitment to customers to create ingredients and solutions that have helped improve the quality of life for billions of people around the world. The solar panels at global headquarters are just one of many similar solar installations planned for Kemin sites around the world, including at South Africa and China.

In addition to solar panels and building Habitat for Humanity at its headquarters, globally Kemin has organized tree plantings, hosted customer events, expanded its employee service day to include all global teams and will donate funds to several non-profit organizations in recognition of his 61 years of service since 1961.
