Efforts are underway to save the Bassett Community Center

BASSETT, Va. (WDBJ) – The residents of Bassett are trying to raise money through fundraisers and grants to save the Bassett Community Center.

The Bassett Community Center opened in 1960; it has been home to many events and recreational activities for decades.

“It’s been an iconic recreational facility for so many years and there are so many things to do. This place was full every day, especially in the summer with the pool. Then the high school had basketball games here in the very large gymnasium,” said Save the Bassett Community Center committee member Michael Jarrett.

The Bassett Community Center closed permanently two years ago.

“A lot of the industry left and went somewhere else,” Jarrett said. “With the industry and people leaving, the economy was tough and the support for the community center wasn’t as good as it used to be.”

Save the Bassett Community Center Committee hopes to raise enough money to reopen the center and eventually turn the pool into a water park.

“There are a lot of people who don’t have anywhere to train, go to the pool or go to daycare, which is important in this region and very necessary,” added Jarrett.

So far they have raised $20,000 of the $750,000 they will need to reopen the community center.

“We just need support and we’re trying to open this thing up,” Jarrett explained. “It’s just a very large recreational facility to serve the community and the community needs it.”

Save the Bassett Community Center Committee will organize a raffle Bassett Heritage Festival September 10.
